The Future of Interoperability

The Natural Law of Specialization

Since the inception of our fund II, our thesis has been that it is impossible for one blockchain or one ecosystem alone to encapsulate all the needs of Web3. Hence the future is inevitably multi-chain. Why the obsession with multi-chain? History and nature have taught us that in a world that is constantly in flux, the stable state is plurality, and the optimal state is specialised symbiosis. Just as the world fragments into empires, countries, provinces, neighbourhoods, families, and individuals; Just as nature fragments into habitats, species, organs, cells, and cellular organelles — So will blockchains fragment to form a multi-chain, modular mesh.

The Composability Challenge

The emergence of specialized chains has created unprecedented opportunities but also introduced significant friction in cross-chain composability. History shows us that removing friction points in technology adoption – whether it's the internet's protocol stack or mobile payment systems – leads to exponential rather than linear growth.

The Evolution of Interoperability: 2022-2024

The 2022 Landscape

In early 2023, we published an extensive analysis of the blockchain interoperability landscape that identified three dominant approaches:

  1. Trust Humans: The ecosystem was dominated by solutions like Multichain and Wormhole that relied on multi-sig implementations and majority honesty assumptions. These solutions were simple but introduced significant trust requirements.
  2. Trust Game Theory: Projects like Axelar and Celer implemented economic security through staking and slashing mechanisms. While more sophisticated than pure trust-based solutions, they still relied on economic incentives rather than cryptographic guarantees.
  3. Trust Code/Math: Early-stage solutions began exploring light clients and zero-knowledge proofs, but the technology wasn't mature enough for practical implementation. ZK remained a promising but distant future for most projects.

Along with the trust assumptions, we also focused on 2 different approaches to integration: Point-to-Point and  Hub and Spoke**.** Point to Point is relatively difficult to scale but provides more flexibility to customize configurations, if needed. Hub and Spoke on the other hand requires intermediate re-execution. ****We contended that in the future, cost of generating ZK proofs will decrease, blockchains will become more zk-friendly and “Trust code/math” category will mature and we will see a plural future where multiple approaches co-exist.

The ZK Revolution

Since 2022, we've witnessed a technological revolution in Zero-Knowledge Proofs that has fundamentally accelerated trust minimzed interoperability:

Technological Breakthroughs

  • General Purpose zkVMs: General purpose zkVMs like Succinct Labs and RiscZero enable any developer to seamlessly integrate ZKPs using standard Rust code. These zkVMs empower many different use cases like enabling optimistic rollups and rollup stacks to build fast and affordable zkEVM rollup. Example, Succinct Labs announced full validity proving on the OP Stack, with average proving cost of 61 cents per transaction on Base.
  • Proof Generation Optimization: Over the past 2 years, the time and cost associated with proof generation has decreased significantly. RISC Zero was able to achieve 25 MHz in e2e performance with Taiko, which translates to proving a typical ETH block in ~90 seconds. As of May 2024, Risc Zero has achieved a 10x cost improvement since the beginning of Q1 and aims to achieve 20x improvement by the end of 2024.
  • Modularization of ZK infrastructure: Emergence of dedicated proof generation marketplaces like Fermah, proof verification layers like Aligned Layer and proof aggregation projects like Nebra allow dedicated teams to work and optimize every step of ZKPs. These optimizations will allow ZKPs to scale efficiently.
  • Continuous Innovation: Along with RISC-V implementations like Succinct’s SP1 and RicZero, new general purpose zkVMs like Jolt and Valida are also emerging. Starkware team has announced its new STARK prover, Stow, which promises to prove the new state root of Ethereum in half a second on an M3 Pro laptop. Kakarot is using Stwo prover to build Keth to generate proofs for Ethereum and rollup blocks in under 1 second.

Market Evolution

While ZK technology has matured significantly, the blockchain ecosystem has become increasingly fragmented:

  • Proliferation of application-specific chains
  • Growth of Layer 2 solutions
  • Emergence of new Layer 1 ecosystems

The convergence of maturing ZK technology and increasing chain specialization has created a unique market opportunity. Users and developers alike seek an interoperability solution that's fast, cost-effective, and intuitive. This is where Union steps in. Through innovations like trustless verification, state lenses, and intent-based bridging, combined with its scalable architecture and universal settlement capabilities, Union is tackling the interoperability challenge from first principles. It's not just about connecting chains; it's about making cross-chain interactions as seamless as using a single chain.

Union: Engineering the Future of Interoperability

1. Trust Minimized Architecture

Union's approach to interoperability stands out through its innovative use of ZKPs, BLS signature aggregation and Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) style light client approach:

  • Elimination of Trust Requirements: Unlike traditional solutions that rely on trusted parties or economic incentives, Union removes the need for oracles, multi-sigs, or MPCs.
  • Efficient Verification: BLS signature aggregation enables compact, quickly verifiable proofs regardless of the underlying data volume.
  • Democratic Accessibility: Users can generate proofs on consumer-grade hardware, ensuring true decentralization and resistance to centralization pressures.
  • Community lead trusted ceremony: The Trusted Setup Ceremony is crucial to ensure the integrity and security of the ZKPs used in the system and requires only one honest contributor for the proving system to be secure. Union’s trusted ceremony saw massive participation from the entire web3 community, logging more than 1000 contributions.

2. State Lenses: A Paradigm Shift in Cross-Chain Communication

One of Union's most revolutionary innovations is the introduction of state lenses, which allows Union to adopt Hub and Spoke as well as Point-to-Point architecture:

  • Direct State Verification: State lenses create virtual direct connections between chains, eliminating the need for costly intermediate re-executions.
  • Simplified Architecture: By operating at the connection layer rather than the channel layer, state lenses enable cleaner, more efficient cross-chain communication.

3. Intent-Based Bridging: Revolutionizing User Experience

Union's architecture enables a sophisticated intent-based bridging system that addresses one of the key challenges in cross-chain interactions – finality lag:

  • Near-Instant Transfers: Users experience almost immediate transaction completion through solver-facilitated transfers.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: Support for non-native assets expands the range of possible cross-chain interactions.
  • Ecosystem Growth: Creates new opportunities for market makers and developers to build innovative solutions on top of Union's infrastructure.

4. Settlement Layer

Union adopts a light client-based bridging approach. Just light clients do not take into account attacks like Censorship Attacks, Block Reorganizations and Liveliness Failures. Union leverages IBC standard to correctly handles these cases. The extensible light client architecture transforms it into a universal settlement layer for all rollups. :

  • Flexible & permissionless Verification: Support for both ZK proofs of execution and Optimistic rollup fraud proofs through customizable light clients enabling any rollup to deploy their verification mechanism through permissionless light client code uploads
  • Fast Finality: Rollup settlement on Union enables fast finality across all supported rollups and while offering the flexibility to choose from various DA layers like Celestia, Ethereum, and Avail

5. The Network effect

  • Exponential Efficiency Gains: Union architecture works at tiny scale but as more chains integrate and transfer volume grows, the cost per transfer decreases, creating a powerful network effect. The settlement efficiency also improves with increased volume, incentivizing ecosystem growth.
  • Composability Amplification: Each new integrated chain multiplies the possible connections and use cases across the entire network.
  • Developer Empowerment: The open-source nature of Union's codebase enables community-driven innovation and improvement.

Our Investment Thesis

Our investment in Union represents our conviction in three key principles:

  1. The Inevitability of Multi-Chain: No single blockchain can efficiently serve all use cases; specialization is inevitable.
  2. The Power of Removing Friction: Reducing barriers in cross-chain interaction will lead to exponential growth in blockchain adoption and utility.
  3. The Importance of Trust-Minimized Infrastructure: True blockchain interoperability must maintain the trustless principles that make blockchain technology revolutionary.

Beyond the technological innovation, our conviction in Union is deeply rooted in the exceptional team driving it forward. Since May 2023, we've witnessed their remarkable execution capabilities first-hand. Karel's technical leadership as former CTO at Composable Finance, combined with his contributions to NEAR and CosmWasm, provides the deep expertise needed for bridging ZK technology and IBC. What truly sets the team apart is their visionary approach – they understand not just the technical challenges, but the importance of ecosystem-driven and UX focused development. Open sourcing of Union’s codebase is a good example of their commitment to the open, collaborative spirit that drives innovation.

Looking Ahead

As chain specialization increases, Union's infrastructure becomes increasingly crucial. By leveraging trust minimized security approach while maintaining focus on cost, speed and ease of use, Union is laying the groundwork for a cohesive multi-chain, modular mesh.

Union has processed over 1.7mn transactions on testnet, transferring over 2mn packets. Union has also announced partnerships with key ecosystems and projects like Polygon AggLayer, Movement Labs, Berachain, Xion, Arbitrum, Scroll, Secret Network, Skip Protocol etc. Through its fellowship program, Union is incubating the next generation of cross-chain applications and use cases.

We're proud to support Union in this mission and excited to see how their innovations will help shape the future of plurality and composability in blockchain ecosystem.
